Final thoughts on the year's final big fight & Awards

The Holyfield-Valuev fight was one of the slowest and safest bouts I've ever watched. Neither man was ever even in danger of receiving a damaging blow. Valuev is not a powerful puncher. Holyfield tries to minimize the actual punching. I scored it for Holyfield by 1 point, but I can accept the judges' decision. Valuev did actually try to make the fight more than Evander did. Both fighters are shameful in comparison to champions of the past and even the Klitschko brothers. I titled the picture below, "Nice guys awful fight."

Now, for some awards:

FIGHTER OF THE YEAR: Manny Pacquiao (proved himself at 130, 135 and 147 in the same year)
Runner-up: Joe Calzaghe (wins in superfights with Hopkins and RJones)

FIGHT OF THE YEAR: Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez 3 (No question, skill and heart at the highest level)
Runner-up: Antonio Margarito-Miguel Cotto (a fight which displayed skill slowly giving way to power)

FADING INTO THE SUNSET: Oscar DeLa Hoya, Roy Jones (tie)
Runner-up: Hasim Rahman (his dropoff has been huge)

RISING STAR IN THE GAME: Juan Manuel Lopez (no question, he gets KOs)
Runner-up: Chad Dawson (wins over Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver)

WORST FIGHT OF THE YEAR: Nikolay Valuev-Evander Holyfield (nuff said)
Runner-up: Wladimir Klitschko-Sultan Ibragimov (yay, heavyweights!)

TOUGH GUY AWARD: Ricky Hatton, Manny Pacquiao (tie), (these guys will fight anyone)
Runner-up: Bernard Hopkins

WORST PERFORMANCE IN A TITLE FIGHT: Samuel Peter (vs Vitali Klitschko)
Runner-up: Hasim Rahman (vs Wladimir Klitschko)

PRIMED FOR A GREAT 2009: Paul Williams
Runner-up: Juan Manuel Lopez

HOLY SHIT

Well JB's assessment was spot on, and by most accounts, Holyfield should have won on the cards... but Valuev escaped with a majority decision win in what boxing fans around the world are calling one of the most abysmal heavyweight title fights in history. But the real winner was me, because I did not see the fight. JB can give a better synapsis of this "fight" later since he paid for it.

And with that, it brings a close to the boxing calendar for the year 2008. It was an interesting year, a lot of good things happened, and a lot of bad. But where does boxing, as a sport, stand now compared to a year ago? Who cares, because we're all huge fans anyway, right?

So stay tuned to the Flyweight site, we ain't going anywhere. In fact, our year is far from over... I will be posting a Year in Review, and me and JB both have to give you our Year-End Awards. Look for that in the upcoming days. Until then, enjoy your holidays and stay warm.

Yours in pugilism,
Richard C. Nougat

The Hitmen and Larry Merchant's Vodka Breath await...

Jay and I are going to spring for the Holyfield-Valuev fight today on PPV. I know we probably shouldn't, but Valuev's fights are hard to catch and this could be Evander's last. This should be Evander's last. Evander looks ripped as usual at 214 lbs and Valuev is surprisingly light at 311. He weighed 328 for his title defense against Monte Barrett just two years ago.

In my estimation, this fight comes down to how much true stamina Evander Holyfield has. The moment he becomes a sitting duck for Valuev, this fight could end. While Valuev is not a huge puncher, he can knock people down and he can also put punches together. While his greatest weapon is unquestionably his jab, Valuev also fights with caution and possesses a great chin.
What Evander has to offer is a different story. Holyfield is likely to be the faster fighter. He is also the better tactition (meaning that he delivers punches with more skill) and can throw impressive combinations. However, Evander takes long breaks during rounds and has a tendency, at this stage of his career, to lean in with one punch and then clinch. Valuev has battled very competitively with John Ruiz through 2 fights (in 2005 and 2008). I'm going to use that as a barometer for this fight. Ruiz battled competitively with Holyfield in 2000 and 2001. Since that time, Ruiz has declined slightly but Holyfield has declined significantly. Because Holyfield is not as good as Ruiz and because Ruiz could not defeat Valuev, I make Valuev the favorite by either unanimous decision or late round TKO. There is only an outside chance that Holyfield's faster hands and better looking combinations could steal rounds in a tactical match, leading to Holyfield emerging victorious in a close decision. This is why we're watching...

Fascinating article that offers some great insight on the business side of boxing, and a behind-the-scenes look at some of the events leading up to the Pacquiao-De La Hoya fight.

Fights Fights Fights

The world of boxing has been active lately. First, one must give credit to Juan Manuel Lopez for another victory (another 1st round KO) last Saturday on the DLH-Pacquiao undercard. The WBO Junior Featherweight Champ moves to 24-0 and Simply Juanderful moves to 6-0 with the win.

On Thursday, Dec. 11th, IBF Cruiserweight Champion Steve Cunningham fought an entertaining bout against mandatory challenger and former Light Heavyweight Champion Tomasz Adamek of Poland. Cunningham ( proved weak of chin in the fight and his three trips to the canvas ended up being the difference in the fight as Adamek (34-1) won by split decision. Adamek moves to the top spot in the Cruiserweight (200 lb.) division.

Wladimir Klitschko (of Larry Merchant's Vodka Breath) scored a dominating 7th round TKO over Hasim Rahman. Klitschko landed his jab at will, controlling the fight at all times. Rahman had no answer and didn't seem to care that much. Vodka Breath moves to 3-0 with 2 KOs.

James Toney returned to action against former title challenger "Fast" Fres Oquendo. I watched some of the fight and Toney looked sloppy and winded. Oquendo looked weak but had a little more fire in him than Toney. I thought Oquendo won a close decision, but alas the judges found Toney the winner by split verdict.

In other news, former champion Riddick Bowe did finally make his way back into the ring on the Klitschko-Rahman undercard. According to reports, Bowe was slow and hittable but still possesses a decent left jab. Bowe won an 8-round decision to move to 43-1.

League Records:
Simply Juanderful (6-0)
Children Eaters (4-0)
Vodka Breath (3-0)
Knuckle Sandwich (2-0)
Hitmen (2-1)

Farewell to the Golden Boy

Manny Pacquiao moved up to welterweight and dominated Oscar De La Hoya, with "The Golden Boy" quitting on his stool after round 8. Pacquiao weighed 142 lbs, retaining enough quickness and adding enough strength to completely outbox Oscar. Oscar seemed to be proving a point by weighing in at 145 lbs. but by all accounts he was not the physical specimen, or the fighter he once was. For Mark's Knuckle Sandwich, Pacquiao adds a quality win, complete with knockout. Pacquiao has now proven himself as the no. 1 fighter in the sport. Oscar has proven that his career at the top is over. Good bye, Roy Jones. Good bye, Oscar De La Hoya. And, for God's sake, on Dec. 20th, I hope we say a FINAL goodbye to Evander Holyfield.

Simply Juanderful posts a 5-0 record

Paul "the Punisher" Williams easily moved up to 154 lbs. and defeated Verno Phillips for the WBO Jr. Middleweight Title. Williams suffered a cut during the fight but landed far more punches and gradually wore Phillips down. Simply Juanderful moves to 5-0 and Paul Williams becomes the first fighter in our league to have 2 fights.

Next up: De La Hoya-Pacquiao. Mark attempts to snag his 2nd victory with Pacquiao stepping into the ring against Oscar. Pacquiao will easily have the faster hands, but De La Hoya will undoubtedly be longer and stronger. A chance exists that Oscar could bomb Manny out of there with sharp hooks, but Pacquiao always fires back. Oscar took a bit of a facial beating against light-hitting Steve Forbes and Pacquiao is certain to inflict at least as much damage. If Pacquiao does indeed have his body strong at 147 lbs, he is most certainly the better fighter and should win a decision.

Boxing News and Notes from across the globe

If you haven't heard the horrible news, the Winky Wright-Michi Munoz fight, scheduled for Dec. 4 on Vs., has been cancelled due to a left hand injury sustained by the inactive Winkster. His last fight was in July 07, an agonizingly dull decision loss to Bernard Hopkins (press conf pictured above). Way to go.

But the good news is that the 2009 schedule starting to shape up, headlined by the signing of Antonio Margarito vs. Sugar Shane Mosley for 1/24 on HBO. Good to see Margarito (of Larry Merchant's Vodka Breath fame) come back with a quality fight and definitely nice that they didn't throw this on a PPV....hopefully a sign of things to come. Should be a nice nice fight. Cotto is also reportedly coming back in January and I think they're trying to build up to the Margarito-Cotto sequel this summer.

Also on 2/14, HBO brings us a quality doubleheader of Alfredo Angulo vs. Ricardo Mayorga and Nate Campbell vs. Ali Funeka. Household names, I know. But I think these will be a couple of action-packed fights. You might remember Mayorga, who put on a clown-like performance, getting KO'd by SS Mosley in the very last second of their fight back in September. And Campbell holds 3 lightweight belts, but he will have gone almost a full year without a fight since winning the titles back in March vs Juan Diaz.

Don't forget this Saturday, Paul Williams will be fighting Verno Phillips on HBO, as he attempts to bring Simply Juanderful to a 5-0 mark.

And a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families, from everyone here at flyweight.blogspot.com.

ps. De La Hoya-Pacquiao is in only 10 days. Who's gonna take it and how??? Vote on the poll.

The Hitman helps The Hitmen

Ricky Hatton completely outmuscled Paulie Malignaggi on Saturday night in Las Vegas, finally winning by 11th round TKO. Malignaggi's trainer, Buddy McGirt, unexpectedly waved the white towel and called the fight with Malignaggi down big on points but still boxing and moving in a competent fashion. The stoppage was a bit strange but helped Jay's Hitmen gain a few extra points. OPTION A = 2 pts. OPTION B = 3 pts. OPTION C = 17 pts.
In the weekend's other big fight, Celestino Caballero KO'd Steve Molitor in round 4, capturing 2 of the belts at 122 lbs.

Big Fights at 122 and 140 this weekend

...that's pounds, baby, pounds. Friday night on ShoBox, 2 junior featherweight titlists look to unify, when WBA champ Celestino Caballero takes on IBF champ Steve Molitor. The winner of this fight is said to be the potential next opponent for WBC champ Israel Vazquez upon his return in 2009. A 4th installment of the great Vazquez-Rafael Marquez series is said to be off for the time being, according to promoter Gary Shaw, so they will be looking for opponents. The other 122 lb champion is Simply Juanderful's own Juan Manuel "JuanMa" Lopez. This is definitely one of the hottest weight classes in boxing in terms of making exciting fights.

My pick: Caballero pulls out in the win in Molitor's homeland of Canada (he's from somewhere near Toronto I think). Most boxers this light don't have names like Steve Molitor. Sounds like he should be batting 2nd for the Blue Jays instead of boxing. Plus, Caballero is 5'11". For a 122-lber that is ridiculous!!!! That is like 1/3rd of me. I have chunks of guys like that in my stool. And he's 5'11". So extremely lanky and tough to fight. It could be an ugly fight but could be exciting. Caballero TKO10

On Saturday night, HBO brings us yet another installment of tasteful sports programming with Ricky Hatton vs. Paulie Malignaggi. This bout is not for an official 140 lb (jr welter) belt, if you will, but instead for what is considered the linear championship, the Ring Magazine belt. Whatever. Hatton has had a stranglehold on this division for a while now. If you recall, he stepped up to welterweight last Decemeber for a mega-PPV event and was KTFO'd by Floyd Mayweather. So back he goes to jr welter to take on another guy who's been near the top for a while, Paulie Malignaggi. So it's the Brit Drunkard vs the Brooklyn Greaseball. This fight has been brewing for sometime, and it's a rare white guy vs. white guy fight.

My pick: I think it will be an underwhelming UD win for Hatton in a fight where he probably has to chase Malignaggi down a little bit. Both guys have shown greatness at times, but have also been lackluster as of late.

The best fight of the weekend may be the HBO lidlifter on Saturday, between junior middleweights James Kirkland and Brian Vera. Look out.

David Haye and Jermain Taylor Score Wins

Jeff's Impregnable Impetuous Children Eaters moved to 4-0 as David Haye scored a 5th round knockout in London over Monte Barrett. Haye was a bit sloppy as a heavyweight but was able to overwhelm Barrett with power shots. Barrett hit the canvas 5 times during the fight, beefing up Jeff's point total. OPTION A= 2 pts OPTION B = 1.5 pts OPTION C = 21 pts.

Across the pond, Jermain Taylor returned to action as a Super Middleweight with a solid performance, winning a 12-round decision over former champion Jeff Lacy. Taylor had the faster hands as he easily outlanded the power-punching, one-dimensional Lacy. Taylor earns OPTION A = 1 pt OPTION B = 2 pts OPTION C = 15 pts with the victory. Larry Merchant's Vodka Breath moves to 2-0.
Rankings by Record:
1. Impregnable Impetuous Children Eaters 4-0
2. Simply Juanderful 4-0
3. Larry Merchant's Vodka Breath 2-0
4. Knuckle Sandwich 1-0
5. The Hitmen 1-1

Children Eaters Add a Win; A Legend Suffers Defeat

Jeff's Impregnable Impetuous Children Eaters added a 3rd victory to their stable with Arthur Abraham's 6th round TKO over Raul Marquez. Reports out of Germany indicate that Abraham controlled the bout with effective aggression and body punching. Abraham earns: OPTION A= 2 pts, OPTION B = 3 pts, OPTION C= 17 pts with the win.

In other boxing action, Free Agents Joe Calzaghe and Roy Jones Jr. tangled for the Ring Magazine Linear Light Heavyweight Championship last night at Madison Square Garden. Jones started strong, flooring Calzaghe in the 1st round with a sharp one-two combination. However, Calzaghe bravely battled on and systematically overtook Jones with speedy combinations and constant aggression and won a unanimous decision victory, 118-109 on all three judges' scorecards. The win moves Calzaghe to 46-0, and he is considering bowing out of the sport with his record unblemished. For Jones (52-5), who suffered a bad cut during the fight and looked his 39 years of age as he struggled to land punches and find openings, the defeat could spell the end of a spectacular career which saw him win titles at middleweight, super middleweight, light heavyweight and even heavyweight (defeating John Ruiz in 2003). Both men have earned the right to say that they left everything they had in the ring.

10 Fights into the League: COMPLETE STANDINGS

With each team having sent a fighter into the ring, we now have some good information to put together. Each team has a victory, and the combined record of drafted fighters is 9-1 with 5 KOs.

OPTION A: 1. Simply Juanderful 7, Children Eaters 3, Vodka Breath 2, Knuckle Sandwich 1, Hitmen 0.
OPTION B: 1. Simply Juanderful 8, Children Eaters 3.5, Vodka Breath 3, Knuckle Sandwich 2, Hitmen -1.
OPTION C: 1. Simply Juanderful 69, Children Eaters 35, Hitmen 19, Vodka Breath 18, Knuckle Sandwich 15.

PER FIGHT AVGs:
Simply Juanderful......OPTION A = 1.75, OPTION B = 2.0, OPTION C = 17.25
Children Eaters..........OPTION A = 1.5, OPTION B = 1.75, OPTION C = 17.5
Vodka Breath..............OPTION A = 2.0, OPTION B = 3.0, OPTION C = 18.0
Knuckle Sandwich.......OPTION A = 1.0, OPTION B = 2.0, OPTION C = 15.0
The Hitmen..................OPTION A = 0.0, OPTION B = -0.5, OPTION C = 9.5

I would propose that Options A and C do not properly reflect the value of accomplishment in a fight all the time. For example, Paul William's nearly meaningless KO of Andy Kolle was 2 pts in Option A, while Chad Dawson's hard-earned win over Antonio Tarver was only 1 pt. Also, Option C favored Williams over Dawson, 18 pts to 17 pts. Juan Diaz' hard-earned win over Michael Katsidis was only 14 pts in Option C, while Mikkel Kessler's win over Danilo "I don't really deserve a title shot" Haussler was worth 18 pts. Just putting in a plug for using Option B as the scoring system, although I do like looking at the higher numbers of Option C.

The top 3 performances by any fighter in our league so far:
1. Juan Manuel Marquez KO11 Joel Casamayor
2. Vitali Klitschko KO 8 Samuel Peter
3. Chad Dawson W 12 Antonio Tarver

The Viking Warrior: Mikkel Kessler wins by KO in the 3rd

Mikkel Kessler made short work of outmatched opponent Danilo Haussler, stopping him in the 3rd round after a knockdown. The Impregnable Impetuous Children Eaters earn OPTION A= 2pts, OPTION B= 1.5 pts, OPTION C= 18 pts

Super Middleweights - big weekend

*
In addition to Knuckle Sandwich's big victory (see below), I should mention that it's also a big weekend in the super middleweight division.

For those of you with Showtime, there is a great title fight on TONIGHT. IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (22-0, 18KO) defends against Librado Andrade (27-1, 21KO). The fight will take place in Bute's hometown of Montreal, where he is huge. The broadcast begins at 11pm, and I'll have the DVR rolling.

This should be a highly entertaining bout. Bute is a powerful puncher who has steamrolled his competition, but he faces the most stern test of his career tonight vs Andrade. Don't expect a KO because Andrade has a chin of steel. His only loss was vs Mikkel Kessler last March....

and speaking of Kessler (40-1, 30KO), he will represent Jeff's Impetuous Impregnable Children Eaters tomorrow night in a WBA super middleweight title defense against the likely overmatched Danilo Haussler in a fight which will take place off American TV in Germany. Kessler has been mostly dormant since his first career loss vs. Joe Calzaghe almost a year ago...he picked up the vacant WBA title in his only fight since then vs. the obscure Dimitri Sartison.

*

Knuckle Sandwich Scores

Well, all teams in the fantasy league are now on the board. Mark's first fighter to step into the ring, Chris John, won a Unanimous Decision, defending his WBA Featherweight Title against a qualified challenger with the last name Enoki. Mark scores: OPTION A= 1 pt. OPTION B= 2 pts. OPTION C = 15pts. with the win.

The Ghost of Middleweight Past: Bernard Hopkins UD12 Kelly Pavlik

**
Hopkins (49-5-1, 32 KO) took Pavlik (34-1, 30 KO) behind the woodshed on Saturday night in Atlantic City, and handed the middleweight champ the first defeat of his pro career, with a lopsided unanimous decision victory in this 170-lb fight. The judges' scorecards read 119-106, 118-108, and 117-109. Since both men were deducted 1 point for various fouls during the fight, this means that the judges combined to only give Pavlik 3 out of a possible 36 rounds. And I think they were being generous. You could have easily made a case for BHop winning all 12 rounds. I do not think Pavlik hit Hopkins with a meaningful power shot the entire night, while Hopkins potshotted "The Ghost" all night, throwing and hitting Pavlik flush with relative ease. Pavlik had never seen hand speed, nor defense, like he saw from the Executioner on Saturday.

It was a virtuoso performance from the old man, remeniscant of his coming-of-age victory over Felix Trinidad 7 years ago, or his thrashing of Antonio Tarver 2 years ago. But this was even more special. Hopkins was about a 4-to-1 betting underdog. Even this boxing writer predicted a Pavlik victory (a KO no less!). As it turned out, Pavlik was lucky to avoid getting knocked out, as he was wobbled several times during the fight, including the 12th round, which was maybe BHop's most dominant.

Many chided the middleweight champ for taking this fight. The Pavlik camp pretty much said that there was no one else to fight, unless you wanted them to take a "meaningless" mandatory fight, which they already did in June vs. Gary Lockett (who was destroyed by Pavlik). Other fights were discussed, but nothing materialized until the opportunity to fight Hopkins came along, and they took it. A $4 million pay day, and a chance to fight perhaps the greatest middleweight champ of all time.

It turned out to be a stylistic nightmare for Pavlik. They might have thought that Hopkins (who averaged about 20 punches throw per round in his loss to Joe Calzaghe in April) couldn't hurt Pavlik, that Kelly would win based on sheer number of punches thrown. But if you would have told me before the fight that Hopkins was going to outthrow AND outland Pavlik... I would have thrown you out of the league. If you care, the final punchstats were as follows:

Hopkins: 530 thrown, 172 landed (32%)
Pavlik: 462 thrown, 108 landed (23%)

Most of Pavlik's punches landed were jabs that Hopkins seem to easily slip. While Hopkins left Pavlik's face bloodied and swollen. It was one of the most improbable results in recent boxing memory, and perhaps the defining moment of a surefire Hall of Fame career.

Where do they go from here? Hopkins called out Roy Jones after the fight...Jones fights Calzaghe on a couple weeks, and if RJ hands the Welshman his first loss, then we very much could be looking at a mega-fight rematch between two past-their-prime Hall of Famers. Even if Jones loses, the Hopkins fight could still come off, as BHop definitely wants some revenge from their first fight, a Jones unanimous decision victory way back in 1993 before both were even in their prime. And Calzaghe has basically said he won't give Hopkins a rematch, so forget about that.

As for Pavlik, he has to look at this as a lesson learned. He was definitely exposed as a fighter who will have trouble vs someone who moves as well laterally as Hopkins. The good news is, he's probably not going to see anyone with Hopkins' skill set anytime soon, AND he is still the middleweight champ. He has a mandatory title defense coming up vs. Marco Antonio Rubio, who won an exciting fight on the undercard. Rubio is a straight-ahead fighter who definitely is there to be hit. In other words, the perfect opponent for Pavlik to get back on track. But looming ahead at some point down the road, is the other consensus Top 2 middleweight in the world, Arthur Abraham. AA has a defensive style which is very tough to crack. At this point, it would not be a stretch to say Pavlik will be an underdog in that fight. But it will be a HUGE middleweight unification fight if/when it happens.

In terms of league implications, this is the first loss for a fighter in our league, as Pavlik's team, The Hitmen fall to 1-1, with 0 KOs and 1 DNMW (did not make weight).

Impressive Wins for Chad Dawson (Eaters) and Vitali Klitschko (Vodka)

With the confusion regarding the actual fighting weights of Bernard Hopkins and Joe Calzaghe, in my mind Saturday's Light Heavyweight Championship fight between Chad Dawson and Antonio Tarver was the biggest showdown in the division since Tarver and Roy Jones fought their rematch in 2004 (Tarver winning by shocking KO in round 2). Last night, "Bad" Chad Dawson proved he has the speed, the skill and the heart to be considered one of boxing's best. Dawson put on a far more dominant performance than he did against Glen Johnson in April. Although Tarver landed a few sporadic lefts, this was Dawson's night and he prevailed by unanimous decision. Dawson even knocked Tarver down in the 12th. OPTION A= 1 pt. OPTION B= 2 pts. OPTION C = 17 pts. Jeff's team is off to a good start.

In the evening's other major bout, Vitali Klitschko returned from a 4-year-layoff to completely dominate Samuel Peter for the WBC Heavyweight Title. Klitschko stood at a distance, moving in a subtle fashion, and slammed jabs and hooks into Peter's face. After 8 rounds of one-sided battering, Peter quit on his stool and Klitschko is champion again. And, if I must say so myself, this ended up being an excellent acquisition by Larry Merchant's Vodka Breath. OPTION A= 2 pts. OPTION B = 3 pts. OPTION C = 18 pts.

STANDINGS:

OPTION A: Simply Juanderful 7, Vodka Breath 2, Hitmen 1, Children Eaters 1

OPTION B: Simply Juanderful 8, Vodka Breath 3, Children Eaters 2, Hitmen 1

OPTION C: Simply Juanderful 69, Vodka Breath 18, Children Eaters 17, Hitmen 16

WAIVER LIMIT?

Mark raised a good point. If we're going to be able to grab guys off waivers, could it be unlimited? I think maybe 5 add/drops for the year would be a good limit. I also like Mark's idea about points per fight. In that case, Bri still leads all 3 scoring options.

OPTION A: Bri 1.75, Jay 1.0, rest of us nothing
OPTION B: Bri 2.0, Jay 1.0, rest of us nothing
OPTION C: Bri 17.25, Jay 16.0, rest of us nothing

A Roster Move....I'm Shaking Things Up

I am hereby claiming Vitali Klitschko off of Waivers and dropping Joe Calzaghe. I am doing this for three reasons: 1. I want to have a fighter step into the ring already! 2. I believe Vitali Klitschko is going to score a nice win over Samuel Peter. 3. I'm not all that certain that Calzaghe will handle Roy Jones.

JUAN More and Jeff's Disappointment

Juan Manuel Lopez scored another win for the dominant Simply Juanderful squad, annihilating overmatched Cesar Figueroa in the 1st round. Although impressive in victory, "Juanma" clearly did something retarded afterwards as evidenced by this picture (above).

In other news, Jeff's Arthur Abraham proclaimed himself to be sick just hours before his fight with Raul Marquez. Then his management team released a picture of him in bed so it seems legit. Maybe it is. Either way, here's a weak looking "King Arthur" looking grumpy.

Paul Williams take Bri to a Commanding Lead

With his devestating 1st round KO of Andy Kolle, Paul Williams racks up some more points for the 1st place team, Simply Juanderful. Williams looked dominant last night as he landed crushing shots and knocked out his overmatched opponent with a booming right hook. Williams gains: OPTION A = 2 pts OPTION B= 1.5 pts and OPTION C = 17 pts with the victory. BWhit's team moves to 3-0, rivaled only by Jay's Hitmen who stand undefeated at 1-0.

Results from Last Night: Marquez a big winner

Juan Manuel Marquez made a very successful debut in the Lightweight Division last night by knocking out Linear (Ring Magazine) Champion Joel Casamayor in the 11th round. The fight was a two-sided, tactical battle early on but Marquez began to assert his superiority in the 2nd half of the 12-round contest. Marquez' performance earns him the highest point totals seen in our league so far.

MAJOR LETDOWN

This just in: The Hitmen's Joan Guzman has pulled out of his fight with Nate Campbell tonight. Guzman claims he is too dehydrated from his failed effort to make weight for the fight. Campbell keeps the title but can't be happy. The Hitmen gain no points and Guzman loses a lot of credit among fight fans for this one.

Updates for Sept 13 fights (LEAGUE IMPLICATIONS)

From Simply Juanderful, Juan Manuel Marquez made weight for his clash with Lightweight Champion Joel Casamayor. The fight promises to be a good one, with both veterans standing a very good chance of hearing the final bell on their feet. I expect Marquez to use his superior skill to win a tactical fight.

For The Hitmen, the news was not so good from yesterday's weigh-in. Joan Guzman, the undefeated Dominican star, was 3 1/2 lbs heavy for his Lightweight Title fight with Nate Campbell. Given that Guzman has just moved up from the 130 lb. division, weighing 138.5 for this fight is not a good sign. Because of his excessive weight, Guzman will not be able to capture the titles tonight although the fight will go on. Although I have been picking Guzman to win in my head up til now, I am changing my pick. Nate Campbell is in better shape, is more comfortable with the weight and has the pride of a reigning champion. Campbell by decision.

As promised....

Here are some grotesque pics of Saturday night's action. Excuse the lack of quality, as I just took pics of the images on my TV (although it is in HD).

Jorge Barrios' lip hanging off

close-up of the lip. Vile. Looks like someone took a box cutter to it.

Katsidis' face. Gatti-esque.

Ironically, the two winners of those fights, Rocky Juarez and Juan Diaz, suffered similarly terrible cuts over their eyes in their previous bouts (which were both losses), very early in those fights, which severely hampered their chances of winning.

In other news.....

In the 115-lb division, one of the best fights to be made, was made. Go figure. Pound-for-pound superstar Cristian Mijares will do battle with newly crowned champ Vic Darchinyan, who spent most of his career at 112 lbs. That fight will go off on November 1, on Showtime. For the record, my favorite Darchinyan moment was his only defeat, at the hands of Nonito Donaire. Watch this (action happens at 1:00).

Diaz SD12 Katsidis

Juan Diaz outpointed Michael Katsidis via split decision in an oddly scored bout.....odd in that Juan dominated the fight and left Katdisis' face mangled beyond repair. Hard to believe one of the judges saw Kats winning the fight....ah boxing. you gotta love it. Anyway, the SD screws me out of 2 points in the fantasy league (using the modified B Whit System)! However, this cements Diaz's return to the lightweight elite. He will likely get another big name fight next.

More on that later. here is the ESPN story (of course not on the front page...but the UFC card is).

In the HBO lidlifter, Rocky Juarez stopped Jorge Barrios in the 11th round thanks to another gruesome cut, which appeared to be a big tear in Barrios' upper lip. Eww. I'll take a pic of my TV with his face on there, thats the best I can do.

In other lightweight news, one of the top prospects in all of boxing, British lightweight Amir Khan was knocked out in under a minute, suffering his first pro career defeat. Huge upset in the boxing world. This would be like the Rams beating the Eagles on Sunday. here is the Khan fight in its entirety.

Juan Diaz vs. Michael Katsidis - This Saturday!

Yes that's right, after a month-long Cotto-Margarito hangover, we're finally back with some real boxing action. Let us harken back to March 2008, one of the great boxing months in recent memory. The month was highlighted by 2 mega-fights, which saw both Marquez brothers lose by a single point in split decisions. On March 1, Israel Vazquez beat Rafael Marquez in Part III of their trilogy, thanks to a furious Vazquez rally in the 12th, where he knocked Marquez down with about 10 seconds to go in the fight. That is widely considered to be Fight of the Year so far. A close runner-up in my book took place on March 15, where Manny Pacquiao outpointed Juan Manuel Marquez by the slimmest of margins, in another all action brawl that saw both guys get busted up pretty badly.

But there were 2 other outstanding fights that month, both in the lightweight division. On March 8, Juan Diaz lost his 3 lightweight belts in a split decision upset to Nate Campbell, in which Diaz suffered a gruesome cut over his left eye. Then on March 22, Joel Casamayor got up from being knocked out of the ring by Michael Katsidis to score a 10th round TKO in a great back-and-forth fight (Casa knocked Katsidis down twice in the 1st round, then Katsidis knocked Casa through the ropes in the 8th).

And now, this coming Saturday, we have Diaz vs. Katsidis - the two men coming off their first career losses in those two lightweight fights will square off in what promises to be another Fight of the Year candidate. Not to mention, Diaz represents our own Simply Juanderful, as they try to score their first points of the league.

That's this Saturday, Sept 6, at 10:15pm on HBO, preceded by a junior lightweight clash between rugged veterans Rocky Juarez and Jorge Barrios.

Valuev W 12 Ruiz

Well, Jay has the first win of our boxing league. Reports out of Germany are that Nikolay Valuev defeated John Ruiz by unanimous decision: 116-111 Valuev, 116-113 Valuev, 114-113 Valuev. The fight went as many expected; Valuev jabbed and Ruiz rushed in with wild shots. However, it seems as if Ruiz was a bit better than expected and some felt that he won the fight. Nonetheless, Jay jumps out to the early lead and the Russian Giant moves to 49-1. Jay receives the following scores: OPTION A= 1 point. OPTION B= 1 point. OPTION C= 16 points.

De La Hoya-Pacquiao is back on

December 6, it's on. Oscar vs Manny. Now supposedly this isn't Oscar's last fight. I will bet a wooden nickel that De La sticks around for one more meaningless payday, against either Mayweather or Hatton. I will not buy a Mayweather-De La Hoya 2 PPV, no way, no how. Hatton is also a name that comes up as a potential next opponent for Pacman, but I'd love to see Pac-JM Marquez 3.

God bless Manny though, for getting the payday he deserves. I'd have loved to see Margarito in there vs the Golden Girl, not only because he deserves the recognition and the payday, but he would put a serious hurtin on Oscar.

So now that we know the details.......PPV party is at my house.

The League Begins

This Saturday marks the first fight of our league as Jay's Nikolay Valuev takes on John Ruiz for the vacant WBA Heavyweight Championship (interim). The fight is a rematch of a battle which took place in December 2005, when Valuev captured the WBA Title from Ruiz via close decision. Having watched the fight previously, I remember 2 things: Ruiz's speed advantage and Valuev's extremely effective jab. While it is very likely that Ruiz's best days are behind him, Valuev appears to be improving. His recent wins over Jean-Francois Bergeron and Sergei Liakhovich showed that his boxing ability has greatly improved. Valuev is, in my eyes, a significant favorite in this upcoming fight. Valuev has an iron chin. If he combines this with an effective jab and improved mobility, he is looking at either a decisive points victory or a late knockout. My prediction: W 12 Valuev.

Point System

We need to figure out how the league will be scored, and we have time to do it since no one has a fighter in action until August 30th (Jay's man, Valuev).

So, I'm going to present 3 options and we'll just vote:

OPTION A: The Extremely Simple Approach

Win = 1 point.
Knockout = 1 point.
Loss = -1 point
Knocked out = -1 point

OPTION B: My quality vs. nonquality fight scoring

(This option involves differentiating between seriously good opposition and not)

QUALITY FIGHT (vs a top 10 contender, a champion or a former champion)
+3 Impressive Knockout
+2 Impressive Decision
+1 Won but Struggled more than expected
0 DRAW
-1 Lost but competed impressively
-2 Lost decisively or KO'd after a competitive fight
-3 Knocked out in lopsided fight

NON-QUALITY OPPONENT FIGHT (someone not a champion/former champ or in top10)
+1.5 Impressive knockout
+1 Impressive Decision
+0.5 Won but Struggled more than expected
-1 DRAW
-2 Lost but competed well
-4 Lost decisively or KO'd after a competitive fight
-6 Knocked out in a lopsided fight

OPTION C: B Whit scoring

10 points for a win
0 points for a loss
In a win: 5 extra pts for a knockout, 3 for unanimous decision, 2 for majority decision, 1 for split decision
Opposition points: 3 for top-level opponent, 2 for fighter of some quality, 1 for journeyman
Knockdown points: 1 point per knocking opponent down, -1 per getting knocked down

Breaking News! PacMan vs De la Hoya is off!!!

Basically this is the 3rd person who has turned down the lucrative payday w/ the fishnets wearing tranny. First Mayweather retired, then Ricky Hatton said no thanks, now Pacquaio is like peace, I ain't taking the short end of no 70-30 split. So at this point, Gay la Hoya has no negotiating leverage.

In my professional opinion, I think there's still a chance he fights Pacquiao, and this was just a negotiating ploy by the Filipino matinee idol to drive up his piece of the pie. I also think there is still an outside shot, that Pretty Boy Floyd comes out of "retirement" to take on Oscar and make a quick $25 mil or whatever. It's either that or he fights someone like "Stinky" Winky Wright (who has nothing on the table at this point) in a bore-fest that no one will care about, or maybe he agrees to come up to light heavyweight to fight the corpulent Tito Trinidad in a rematch of their 1999 welterweight suckfest. An outside shot he fights Miguel Cotto. No way he fights Margarito, he's too scared.

Analysis of Mark's Team: Knuckle Sandwich

To my knowledge, Mark is known to have watched 4 fights. Trinidad-DeLaHoya, where he chipped in $0 out of the $40 pay-per-view charge and felt justified, Lennox Lewis-Holyfield 2, Lewis-Michael Grant and a random Paul Spadafora lightweight title fight.

From this extensive background, Mark began the Knuckle Sandwich team with the consensus #1 fighter in the sport, Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao has an impressive collection of victories: 2 over Marco Antonio Barrera, 2 over Erik Morales, a decision win over Oscar Larios, a decision over Juan Manuel Marquez and a brutal knockout of David Diaz for the Lightweight Title. Still in his 20s, Pacquiao has the best chance of any fighter in the sport at establishing himself as a true all-time great. For his next fight, Pac may decide to tangle with Oscar De La Hoya, a move which will generate great intrigue and great criticism. Pacquiao's short stature and low weight background (former FLYWEIGHT champion) make him a strange opponent for the taller De La Hoya, who once fought Bernard Hopkins at middleweight. Pacquiao will have his work cut out for him, trying to hurt De La Hoya and not be hurt by him in a fight at 147 lbs. In my opinion, Pacquiao's true fighting weight is 130. So, while Pacquiao might be the best fighter in boxing, his fight with De La Hoya at welterweight is actually one he could easily lose.

In the 2nd round, the Knuckle Sandwich picked Miguel Cotto, a skilled fighter who is fresh off of his first career loss. Cotto has all of the tools, but appeared to run out of gas as he was chopped down by Antonio Margarito. Margarito would likely defeat Cotto in a rematch. Cotto is a great fighter, but not the strongest welterweight. Rumors have surfaced that he may fight Andre Berto and that might be his best bet, as Berto is probably less skilled and is definitely less seasonsed. Cotto will likely regain some form of a championship, but his skyrocketing career has slowed down with the loss to Margarito and the retirement of Mayweather.

In the 3rd round, Knuckle Sandwich picked Israel Vazquez, the highly respected WBC Super Bantamweight champion. Vazquez's last fight was an amazing triumph over Rafael Marquez in one of the best fights I've ever seen. Vazquez is a warrior, which means he gets hit a lot. For his sake, I hope he fights some easier opponents before engaging the equally-brave Marquez for a fourth fight.

For his final selection, Mark chose Chris John, the undefeated WBA Featherweight Champion. John's impressive record of 41-0 features a decision over Juan Manuel Marquez in a competitive fight held in John's homeland of Indonesia. John tends to fight obscure opposition, so his reputation is not without its detractors. John needs to fight fellow champions or top contenders to truly establish himself as one of the sport's best. However, his tendency to fight beatable opponents gives him a great chance of piling up the victories.

Analysis of Bri's Team: Simply Juanderful

Here comes a counterattack (I mean, analysis) on Bri's team, a team that vowed early-on to capture every JUAN in the sport. Somewhere, Juan Samuel is applauding and so is his jerri-curl.

For pick number one, Bri chose Juan Manuel Marquez, arguably the most skilled fighter in the sport. However, Juan Manuel lacks dangerous knockout power and this is what leaves him just shy of superstardom. Marquez failed to produce knockouts in his fights with Freddie Norwood, Chris John, Marco Antonio Barrera and in both fights with Manny Pacquiao. Had he done so in any of those bouts, he would be considered a true superstar. Marquez has the craft, but does he have the explosiveness to rock the sport? At age 33, it is doubtful.

Marquez should be able to handle his upcoming fight against Joel Casamayor. Casamayor is older, more faded and probably less skilled. Marquez will likely end up in the ring with Manny Pacquiao again. Could he win? Sure. But he's older than Pacquiao, hasn't won in 2 tries against him and lacks the one-punch knockout threat. All in all, a great fighter but his best days could be behind him.

Bri's second pick was the tall welterweight Paul "The Punisher" Williams. Williams' greatest wins are a 12-round decision victory over Antonio Margarito and a 1st round destruction of Carlos Quintana in a rematch. However, his only loss (by decision to Quintana) has raised questions about his skill level. Williams got whipped in the face repeatedly in that fight and actually did well for himself to go the distance. He also faded in his close win over Margarito. The Punisher is certainly beatable, but with his size and growing confidence, he's a formidable opponent for anyone.

In the third round, Bri chose the upstart Juan Manuel Lopez, the new WBO Super Bantamweight Champion. Lopez has to be considered one of the most impressive rising stars of boxing with his 1st round pummeling of respected champion Daniel Ponce de Leon. Lopez has more to prove, but has all the promise in the world.

For his final pick, Bri knew he needed another Juan, so he went Diaz. Juan Diaz was one of the most impressive champions in boxing before his recent loss to Nate Campbell. His ridiculous work rate tends to make up for his lack of power and relatively pourous defense. He absorbed a ton of shots against Nate Campbell. I remember feeling sorry for him as the fight neared the end. He faces Michael Katsidis, a tough brawler, in what is sure to be entertaining. He probably has enough to beat Katsidis. But will he ever regain the Lightweight Title? Not against Pacquiao, Marquez or Guzman in my opinion.

Analysis of Jay's Team: The Hitmen

The Hitmen started their boxing team with perhaps the most popular American fighter in the game today, Kelly Pavlik. Pavlik has proven himself to be the real deal with impressive victories over Edison Miranda and Jermain Taylor. Pavlik showed that he could both outbox and outslug Taylor, establishing himself as one of the best in the sport. After all, Jermain Taylor outboxed (or more like outhustled) the great Bernard Hopkins and was undefeated before facing Pavlik.
Pavlik's biggest downfall is probably his bravery. Both in his style of fighting and in his match-making decisions. Pavlik faces Bernard Hopkins on October 18th in a fight that most are picking him to win. However, Hopkins can be difficult to hit and still throws crisp right hands, which may give Pavlik problems if he's not landing his own thunder. Pavlik looks strong, but his questionable defense makes him somewhat vulnerable.

Next, the Hitmen selected "The Hitman" Ricky Hatton. No offense to the O.G. hitman Thomas Hearns, perhaps Hatton should be referred to as Hitman Vanilla. Following his loss to Mayweather, Ricky Hatton returned to the ring with a solid win over tough Juan Lazcano. Hatton's biggest strengths are his heart, his aggression and his hard body punches. However, he is extremely hittable and prone to cuts, so he's never really safe going into a fight. Hatton's next fight is against the light-hitting, fast Paulie Malignaggi. Hatton will need a high workrate to win the fight. Unless he catches Malignaggi with some of his big shots, Hatton may be in for a long night of pitty-pat combinations to the dome.

For their third pick, the Hitmen chose Nikolay Valuev, the 7-foot, 320 pound Russian giant. Valuev's 48-1 record is impressive, and given that his only loss was by 2 points to undefeated WBA Champ Ruslan Chagaev, Nikolay has never really been exposed or beat up. His next fight against John Ruiz figures to allow him another chance to win a decision against a quality fighter. Valuev will likely fare well against any opponents other than Wladimir Klitschko or Samuel Peter, who just might have the thunder to knock the big man down. Given Valuev's probable future fights: Ruiz, Chagaev....he looks safe.

With their final selection in the draft, the Hitmen chose Dominican sensation Joan Guzman. Guzman has impressively outpointed both Jorge Barrios and Humberto Soto and established himself as one of the best at 130 pounds. As he moves up to 135 to challenge Nate Campbell, Guzman will have to dig deep to outpunch one of the toughest guys in the business. His youth and energy should give him an edge over Campbell and should make him a favorite against any fighter other than Pacquiao or Marquez.

An unbiased opinion of Larry Merchant's Vodka Breath

First of all thanks to JB for this wonderful idea. Now I will proceed to rip his team to pieces. j/k it's not that bad.

With his first pick, the #5 overall, he selected consensus p4p #2 in the world, the undefeated super middleweight and light heavyweight champion Joe Calzaghe of Wales. Calzaghe has long dominated the super middleweight (168 lb) division, mostly cleaning out all of Europe. He is widely considered to be one of the best fighters in the world because he won most of his toughest fights in such dominant fashion, in particular vs. Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler. Also, he never fought in the U.S. until his split decision win over Bernard Hopkins back in April. That was a rather boring bout in which he was actually knocked down by the old man in the 1st round. With the win, Calz added the universally recognized 175 lb championship to his 168 lb title. Joe next faces off against Roy Jones Jr, a man several years past his prime, on November 8. (I should note that Jones's last fight was a easy decision win over a faded Tito Trinidad in January). Also, Calzaghe spurned an opportunity to fight middleweight king Kelly Pavlik, so it appears he is now officially on boxing's seniors tour. However, a win over Jones, and a Pavlik win over Hopkins in October, and we could see the two pasty white unbeaten stars face off in a mega-fight sometime in 2009.

In terms of fantasy value, Calzaghe is expected to beat Jones, although some say RJJ poses more of a threat to him than Hopkins did. However, it is unlikely that he would KO Jones. Also a fight vs. Pavlik would probably be a toss-up, so I'm not sure if Calz is a worthy 1st round fantasy pick.

JB came right back with pick #6 and selected Antonio Margarito, who is one of the hottest names in boxing right now after becoming the undisputed welterweight king after KOing Miguel Cotto a couple weeks ago. Marg is not known as a great tactician of the game, and he is prone to take some flush shots to the face, but his M.O. is his chin, his balls, and his unrelenting offensive attack, often throwing upwards of 100 punches per round, an output that few opponents can withstand. In recent days, Marg has been trying to win the de la Hoya sweepstakes by calling out the fishnet-wearing tranny every chance he can get. However, it's unlikely that Oscar will choose to face someone as dangerous as the Tijuana Tornado for his farewell bout (instead he will likely opt for Manny Pacquiao, who is dangerous, but he's toiled as low as 105 lbs early in his career). So now promoter Bob Arum is trying to get Marg a fight for November 1, and the name Joshua Clottey has been mentioned, and that fight could take place in Dodger Stadium, headlining a huge PPV show. Marg won a UD over Clottey back in December of 06 in a bout which was tougher than expected.

Fantasy value: The fact that Margarito is coming right back and will likely fight again this year is a good thing. However, his style is definitely high risk/high reward. Margarito is not going to be outworked, but he could be outboxed and if he faces someone who holds up to his vicious onslaught better than Cotto, it's not out of the question that he could be defeated. All in all, a good choice though, as Arum will likely not put Marg in too much danger, as they will probably try to build up to a rematch with Cotto next summer.

Next up was 3rd-rounder Wladimir Klitschko, the man universally recognized as the best heavyweight in the world. "Dr. Steelhammer" has not endeared himself to hardcore fans though, as he has been unimpressive in recent bouts. A unification victory over Sultan Ibragimov back on Feb 23 was one of the most boring piece of crap fights in history. In fact, to call this a fight would be an insult to the sissy slap fights that Jeff and Joel used to have back in the Decatur schoolyard. However, much of the apathy about Wlad's heavyweight reign can be attributed to the lack of quality opposition out there for him. On the horizon lies some intriguing opponents. He has a mandatory fight vs. unbeaten Russian gold medalist Alexander Povetkin due. Whether he'll take that fight next remains to be seen, as he could opt for another tomato can that will make him huge money on German TV. And at some point down the line, if the heavyweight division is ever to be unified, he'll likely find himself in the opposite corner of Samuel Peter, who is considered the world's #2 heavyweight. Wlad already handed Peter his only defeat a few years ago, in a bout in which Peter knocked him down 3x. Other than that, Wlad dominated him en route to a UD. The other name that comes to mind is undisputed cruiserweight champion David Haye, who is moving up to heavyweight. "The Hayemaker" has been calling out Wlad, saying he's going to clean up the division. However Haye has a lot to prove before he gets a shot at the big dog.

Fantasy value: Wlad will likely fight at least twice in the next calendar year, and there is really no one on the horizon who poses much of a threat to him. As the comp gets a little more difficult, he may not score KOs, but he should be able to do what he's been doing for the past few years, out-jabbing his opponents and using his size advantage to score rather easy wins. The only name on the horizon who I think could beat Wlad now is Sam Peter.... and I don't see that fight happening any time soon.

With the first pick of the last round, JB went with Jermain "Bad Intentions" Taylor. Taylor is at a crossroad, coming off the first two losses of his career, both to the man who took his middleweight crown, Kelly Pavlik. He's now facing his 2000 Olympic teammate Jeff Lacy on Nov 15, which should be a good comeback fight for Taylor, as Lacy is likely on the down side of his career. It remains to be seen if the Pavlik fights ruined Taylor, although it was a good sign that Taylor came back in the February 08 rematch and fought well, but losing a UD, after being brutally KOd by "The Ghost" in Sept 07. After Lacy, Taylor will probably get a title bout in the super middleweight division, but he might not want to jump in with another dangerous fighter for a while... one name thrown out there as a potential 2009 opponent is unbeaten British rising star Carl Froch.

In terms of JT's fantasy value, he hasn't been known as a KO puncher for a while, and in fact has no KO wins in his last 7 fights (the last one was Feb 05 vs. Daniel Edouard). However, he did knock Pavlik down in their first fight, and if a less tolerant ref than the great Steve Smoger was the 3rd man in the ring that night, Taylor could have scored a 2nd round TKO and the landscape of boxing as we know it would be completely different. However, I expect Taylor to beat Lacy rather easily, and if so he should be on the path toward a title at super middleweight.

Analysis of Jeff's Team

The Impregnable Impetuous Children Eaters cleverly rekindled the inspiring sentiments of a desparate, late-career Mike Tyson as he sought a huge payday against Lennox Lewis. Manager Jeff Whitmore's first pick was Arthur Abraham, a somewhat surprising choice as a #1 overall, but Jeff was quite clear that he wanted "the guy that got his jaw broke by the African who kept getting docked points." And so the draft began...

The 'Eaters' feature IBF Middleweight Champion Arthur Abraham, who boasts an undefeated record with a high knockout percentage. He is coming off of a 4th round destruction of Edison Miranda and now stands as the only legitimate middleweight to challenge Kelly Pavlik for supremacy. Abraham is likely waiting with great anticipation for the outcome of Pavlik vs. Hopkins.

Mikkel Kessler was the 2nd choice for the 'Eaters.' Kessler, at 40-1, has an impressive record with wins over quality opponents such as Markus Beyer, Librado Andrade and Anthony Mundine. However, Kessler lost his only high-profile fight to Joe Calzaghe, although he competed well and won perhaps 4 out of the 12 rounds. It remains to be seen whether or not Kessler will now dominate the division that Calzaghe has ruled for so long.

The 'Eaters' decided to go black in the 3rd round, selecting undefeated Light Heavyweight Champion Chad Dawson. Dawson is the heir apparent to the division, having defeated Tomasz Adamek for the WBC title and having successfully defended against Glen Johnson earlier this year. The knock on Dawson is that he can be hurt, as Johnson proved in their fight. Dawson is a quick, skilled champion who has shown championship-level heart. It remains to be seen whether or not he can outbox a motivated Antonio Tarver.

For their final selection, the 'Eaters' made the intriguing choice of David Haye, the undisputed Cruiserweight Champion. Haye vanquished former champions Jean-Marc Mormeck and Enzo Maccarinelli by KO and began to inspire questions about whether or not he could take his skills up to heavyweight. Now, Haye is finding out. Haye has already challenged current Heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko and now is attempting to build a resume to earn a title shot. Reports are that Haye is already a strong 230 lbs. David Haye has perhaps the best chance of any fighter to bring true respect back to the Heavyweight crown.
