I sit here in stunned silence at the performance of the Sugar Man. He f'd Margarito up - I never thought I'd see him get bludgeoned like that. This was very reminiscent of Hopkins' depantsing of Pavlik back in October. A masterful performance by the veteran fighter over the younger, more fan-friendly brawler.
A sad side note - while watching Margarito's hands get wrapped before the fight, Mosley trainer Nazim Richardson noticed an illegal substance on Marg's wraps, which was determined to be some wet hardening substance. This forced Marg to wrap his hands 3 more times until it was deemed legal by the California State Athletic Commission. The announcers even seemed to cast a pall on Marg's win over Cotto in July. We'll see as more details emerge, but this is no doubt a black eye. No proof that there was anything illegal vs. Cotto, or any other fights. But this looks really bad for Margarito, and also for boxing. This should have been a banner night, with the record crowd at the Staples Center. Hey - all credit due to Sugar Shane, he got up in that ass. The cries are now coming for Mosley-Mayweather, but I have a feeling Money May is waiting on the Pacquiao/Hatton winner. Perhaps Sugar can get a rematch with Cotto, or even a fight with Paul Williams. But the welterweight division was completely thrown into chaos tonight, and we are sure to see some titilating bouts at 147 in 2009.
and damn I was gonna pick up Darchinyan, but JB got him first. He is going to smack Arce around in 2 weeks. I'll have to search the waivers for a suitable replacement for Juan.
Side note: the Top 3 fighters in each of the 2 most high-profile promotions, Golden Boy and Top Rank, have faced off against each other in the last 3 months or so. What does this mean? Nothing.
Oct - Hopkins (GBP) beats Pavlik (TR)
Dec - Pacquiao (TR) beats De La Hoya (GBP)
Jan - Mosley (GBP) beats Margarito (TR)
No boxing next weekend (some stupid football game is going on), but in 2 weeks we have Darchinyan-Arce and Kid Diamond-DiMarco on Showtime. Does anyone care? Of course not. But you know I will be on the couch watching it in HD, drinking another 12-pack of Beck's.
Signing off.
