Oro adds 2 wins and a Rare Fight for Andrew; STANDINGS

Lucian Bute won by 4th round knockout against challenger Jean Paul Mendy in France yesterday. Bute moves to 29-0 in his career and pushes Oro's Team Tyson's Punchout to 11-1 with 9 KOs on the season. (About a week ago, Pongsaklek Wonjongkam won a fight in Thailand that was barely reported, also a win for Oro).

Paul Williams (40-2) received what most observers felt was a gift decision last night against Erislandy Lara. While the judges scored for Williams by majority decision, HBO's Harold Lederman scored the fight 117-111 for Lara. While I have yet to see the fight, reports indicated that Williams took a lot of brutal shots to the face and ended up a bloody mess. Andrew's Money Marenghi adds .5 with the win (3-1 on the season).

Wladimir Klitschko defeats David Haye; Klitschko Brothers' rule is undisputed

With a whimper, not a bang, Wladimir Klitschko defeated a backpedalling David Haye by 12-round Unanimous Decision. After an extensive promotional buildup to the fight, boxing fans were hoping that we'd get something we haven't seen in a long time: a 2-sided, high quality, heavyweight championship fight. We didn't get that. What we got was 2 cautious fighters fighting virtually the same performance in every round: Klitschko firing jabs, Haye throwing 3 or 4 windmill shots. Klitschko wasn't great, but Haye wasn't even good. The win gives Bryn 2 pts and moves The Girl's Team to 4-1-1. With Vitali Klitschko owning the WBC belt, Wladimir added Haye's WBA Title to their collection, making the brothers the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.

In Argentina, Mark's Celestino Caballero suffered a hard-luck split decision loss to Jonathan Victor Barros. Reports indicate that the verdict may have been the product of hometown judging. Mark's team falls to 5-2.

It's on

With the weigh-in complete, (Klitschko 243 lbs, Haye 213 lbs) the best heavyweight fight in at least 8 years is set to take place tomorrow. In 2003, Wladimir's older brother Vitali Klitschko gave Lennox Lewis a bit of a beating before losing by 6th round TKO due to a gruesome cut. While that fight was unquestionably a great one, the fact is that Lewis was past his prime and somewhat out of shape (weighing a career-high 256 lbs). So...if Lewis-Klitschko was a match-up that had its flaws, how far back do we have to go in heavyweight history to find 2 well-conditioned, motivated superstars in their prime fighting for all the marbles? Suffice it to say that this is the best heavyweight title fight since the 90s.

David Haye (25-1, 23 KOs) is the WBA Heavyweight Champion, having defeated Nikolai Valuev by decision in 2009. He's defended against John Ruiz and Audley Harrison, winning both fights by knockout. Haye has great heavyweight speed and solid boxing skills. His power has been a factor in all of his fights at heavyweight. He'll be looking to use both boxing skills and power against Klitschko.

Wladimir Klitschko (55-3, 49 KOs) is the IBF, WBO & Ring Magazine Heavyweight Champion, as well as the star of Bryn's The Girl's Team. He's been the class of the division since 2005. Klitschko's greatest strengths are his active and strong jab, as well as his smothering defense which has essentially prevented him from being hurt for about six years. He'll be looking to land that jab and follow up with power shots against Haye.

Prediction: I feel like the excessive trash-talking that's taken place before the fight will benefit Haye, who likes to attract attention and likes to pump himself up. He's gotten under Klitschko's skin and has put the Ukranian in an awkward position of trying to decide on going for the KO or simply boxing a safe fight from a distance. Both fighters have predicted a knockout, and both are capable of doing so. But will they take the risks? Both fighters have been KO'd in the past. When the bell rings, I expect a very cautious start. There's no way that either fighter will be brawling from the get-go. As Haye starts to unleash some power punches, he's most likely going to find that Klitschko is extremely hard to hit. This may lead to Haye trying to win on points with flashy jabs and straight rights while moving, or it may force Haye into the danger zone where Klitschko can smash him with his powerful right hand. In the final analysis, I expect David Haye to give Wladimir Klitschko a competitive fight for about 6 rounds. But as the bout wears on, Haye will be faced with the Shane Mosley dilemma (vs Pacquiao) of "Do I take chances and get hit? Or do I just try to go the distance?" I expect Haye to choose the latter, and as much as I'd like to see Wladimir unleash an effective barrage of damaging shots, I think if Haye wants to survive, he'll be able to. W 12 Klitschko.
